What is gematria by slipknot about

gematria (The Killing Name) is the title of a song by American Heavy Metal band Slipknot, from their fourth studio album All Hope is Gone. The song is about the power of knowledge and how it can be used for destruction.

Gematria is the practice of assigning numerical values to letters according to their order in the alphabet. This practice can be used to decipher deeper meaning from words, as each letter and its numerical value can correspond to other words, revealing hidden messages and secret meanings. This practice has been around since ancient times, first being used by Jewish scholars in continuing an oral tradition/interpretation of biblical passages.

In Slipknot's song, they use Gematria to discuss the idea that knowledge, when left unchecked and unquestioned, has the potential to be dangerous and cause destruction. They compare it with "a killing name" that has become so powerful that it could ultimately bring down entire nations; hence its title. The band also makes further reference to this power through its strong imagery - such as "a crowned king that caused his own downfall" - and introduces the concept of karma: if you do something evil then bad things will happen in return.
